- Cover letter should be customized to the position and company. Do the research on the recruiter. Do not start with "To whom it may concern".
- One page resume customized for the position you are applying for.
- Save your resume in easy to file format "firstname_lastname_company_position"
- Review the job posting and include some of the key words in your resume. Most companies have a computer reviewing your resume so this gives you better chances to be selected.
- May sure you create a spreadsheet with information on each position you have applied for, follow up dates and any information that may help you for the interview or follow up process.
- Stand up during a phone interview as it allows better breathing and speaking
- If you are presenting in front of a panel, make sure to make eye contact with each panelist
- Dress professionally for a video interview. Test your zoom or video and sound system ahead of time. Practice mock interviews, record and review them to improve your skills.
- You can let the recruiter lead the interview especially at the beginning for breaking the ice
- Use professional language, avoid the words "you know".
- Use your fingers to answer the question about "Tell me about yourself" (see additional resources below)
- Keep your answers to about 2 minutes for each question
- Use the Star acronym to answer behavioral questions
- Be prepared to answer the question "What are your weaknesses?" and
- Make sure to follow up with the recruiter 2 weeks after you applied or after an interview.
- You should consider sending a hand written notes a couple of days after an interview to ensure the recruiter remembers you.
- When negotiating compensation or if you are asked about salary ambitions, give a range never give a precise number. You may even want to ask a question back such as "what do you typically pay someone in this position with my experience level?"
