PROFESSIONS IN MARKETING
Industry Insights Marketing
September 30 In this webinar, we spoke with 3 former athletes who have very different positions and journeys in marketing: Camilo Andrade works on the brand side for Nika, Stephanie has her own Press Relation agency and Richie is the creative Director for RICKiRICKi.
Here are the main takeaways from the discussions: |
|
- Key skills athletes can transfer to a career in marketing: curiosity, storytelling, flexibility/adaptation, problem solving, etc. Our panelists also outlined that athletes are goal-oriented, good at receiving feedback, familiar with discomfort, and able to focus in the moment that matters.
- Using your personal story and brand to get a head start in a career in marketing by learning how to communicate about your personal story to sponsors, media and possible networking contacts and to educate yourself further in areas to support your personal brand such digital marketing, influencer marketing, graphic design, branding, public speaking, sponsorships, etc.
- We talk about the fact there are many paths to a career in marketing and many different types of positions in the field. Stephanie and Richie shared their non-traditional path to working in the field starting with writing and storytelling and experimenting with their own brand first.
- You can use blogging to practice writing and storytelling and prepare for a career in marketing. Camilo explained that we all do marketing on a daily basis. Richie reinforce that message by outlining that athletes are both the product marketer and campaign manager. Camilo also mentioned that companies are looking at how athletes are using their voice to be a catalyzer for change and that athletes should be using their positioning to differentiate themselves from others in interviews.
- They outlined the importance to identify your own skills through examples of personal struggles and to use these in interviewing setting to differentiate you from others.
- Richie spoke about his lack of compassion and empathy coming out of a male team sport and the importance for him to relearn how to communicate in a professional setting with coworker.
