Dalia Emara: A Story of Resilience, Growth, and the Power of Community

Dalia Emara is from Egypt and is a Division 1 student-athlete rowing at Stetson University in Florida. As a senior preparing to graduate with a degree in psychology, she is building her life in the U.S. Beyond rowing, Dalia enjoys cycling, running, traveling, spending time in nature, listening to music, and cooking her mom’s recipes.

Dalia’s journey in rowing began as a teenager in Egypt, when she wanted to try something new. She quickly fell in love with the sport—the discipline, the team environment, and how it pushed her both physically and mentally. Rowing became a central part of her identity, and she achieved national success. Moving to the U.S. brought new challenges, but she continued rowing at a local club before joining Stetson University’s team. “Coming from Egypt to compete in the U.S. on my own taught me resilience, independence, and how to keep going even when things feel uncertain,” Dalia reflects.

Despite her achievements, balancing academics, athletics, and personal struggles, including homesickness, often left her feeling overwhelmed. She also faced pressure to perform, tying her self-worth to results, and dealing with harsh self-talk. “There were moments where I was overly critical of myself and felt like I wasn’t enough, no matter how much I was doing,” she recalls. Over time, she recognized the impact of these thoughts and began reaching out for support.

During her time at Stetson, Dalia discovered Athletes’ Soul while searching for an internship to support her professional growth. She then joined both the group coaching and one-on-one mentoring programs. “I wanted to improve the way I talk to myself…because I used to always be hard on myself,” she said. The programs quickly became something she looked forward to each week. “I loved the community—talking to people and hearing other people’s stories. It felt like such a great support system,” she shared. Group sessions allowed her to connect with peers and share openly without judgment, while one-on-one mentoring provided a safe space to explore her personal and athletic experiences. “It was nice to take time away from rowing and school to just sit with awesome people and listen to all these amazing experiences,” she added.

“There were moments where I was overly critical of myself and felt like I wasn’t enough, no matter how much I was doing.”

Through Athletes’ Soul, Dalia built confidence in herself and her positive self-talk, while embracing a stronger sense of identity. “You don’t have to change who you are to fit in or meet a certain expectation—you just have to be authentic to yourself. That’s what makes you special,” she said. She also gained perspective, realizing that life extends far beyond rowing, PRs, or competition, which helps her stay present and enjoy the moment. Exposure to other athletes’ journeys and career paths opened her mind to new possibilities beyond sport. “Just keep showing up and do your best every day…good days and bad days happen, so be a little kind to yourself and enjoy the journey,” she said.

Since participating in the program, Dalia has incorporated yoga and breathwork to manage stress and support her mental and physical health. She reflects on her growth positively, focusing on her own progress rather than comparing herself to others. “Being hard on yourself all the time is not the point,” she said. In challenging moments, she now pauses and grounds herself: “This is not the end of the world, and you can overcome this…just breathe and be there, and be flexible, because if it didn’t challenge you, it wouldn’t let you grow.”

These tools have also improved her performance, helping her manage race-day nerves and transfer her perseverance and diligence from practice into competition. The program strengthened her confidence, especially in environments where she may feel different from those around her. For Dalia, Athletes’ Soul is more than a program—it’s a space that supports athletes as people, helping them grow, reflect, and navigate life during and after sport. To other athletes considering joining the Athletes’ Soul community, Dalia says that the organization is “ a community where you feel supported by other athletes and mentors who truly understand your journey…It’s a very good place to be open and know yourself more. You’re gonna actually love yourself, because you’re unique.” The program, she adds, helps athletes grow not just in performance, but as people, carrying the resilience and perspective gained into life during and after sport.

When Dalia graduates from college, she is excited to explore career paths and is keeping an open mind on what fits her best. As she looks for different opportunities for graduate school and internships, she is focusing on options related to psychology, athlete wellness, mental health, and supporting people through life. She wants to use her experience to have a meaningful impact in people’s lives. “My journey hasn’t been perfect, but that’s what makes it meaningful,” Dalia reflects. Her story is an inspirational example of resilience, growth, and the power of community.
